Halligarth, a sample for Wool People 7

Whoa, two blog posts in a week — careful not to fall off your chair!

This beautiful thing is Halligarth, a shawl pattern designed by Gudrun Johnston for the latest Wool People collection, from Brooklyn Tweed. I knit the smaller beige sample.

It's one of those lace projects that look impressive and difficult but is in fact easy and fun to knit. I definitely have plans to make one for myself. I think it would be heavenly in pale grey. Other things I'd like to knit from the collection: everything! Ok, if I had to choose a few, I'd go with Ivar, Merle, and Natsumi, in the exact same colours featured in the photos. I tell you, they know what they're doing, these wool people!

On a side note, I've seen a lot of positive talk about the use of a gorgeous silver-haired model in this collection. I too am a fan, and dream of a day that this is no longer an extraordinary event but the norm in the media (and hoping too that we'll see a better representation of different body shapes, cultures, abilities, gender expressions etc...)

Now wouldn't that be lovely?

  1. Absolutely beautiful shawl. It is going straight onto my to-knit list. And you can't post too often for me.

  2. I was wondering what you might have knitted up for this latest collection. Love this shawl, it is already in my favourites list and yes, Nicole, perfect in grey!!!

  4. What a beautiful & delicate shawl indeed ! I agree with you about grey hair (and all the rest) that needs to be more present in the medias. I've stopped dyeing my hair a long time ago after noticing that it'd be totally useless on many levels. I'm 36 & my head is already half grey, I bet that by 45 I'll be totally grey ! I just have to go with the flow !

  9. "I think it would be heavenly in pale grey." I have to stop myself from typing this sentence about every single pattern I ever blog about! But that is the way my thoughts are leaning about Halligarth, for sure.

  10. I was wondering which of the pieces you were lucky enough to knit! This was one of my immediate favourites.

Can I ask you about the yardage? I have a skein of Swans Island I'd love to use, but it's only 525 yds (rather than the 590 listed in the pattern). Do you think I'll be okay? How much did you use for the sample?

  11. Hi Angela,
I'm not sure of the exact yardage I used but I do know they sent me 3 skeins (250 yds each), and the yarn I had left was definitely not close to a full skein, which suggests to me that you would not have enough with 525 yds. In my experience working with BT, they take great care to calculate yardage needed, so if the pattern lists 590, then I would say that's pretty accurate to what you would need. I think you should probably find another project for your lovely Swans Island, or get another skein.

  14. I want to knit them all too! Your sample knit is beautiful.

As to the model, she either has flawless skin or she's been digitally assisted to have it. When we accept photographs of people exactly as they are, and see the beauty in their wrinkles and such, that's when I'll be happy.

Oh, yes, what a lovely pattern! And all the while I was reading about it, I was thinking that if I knitted it (I mostly like will) then when I drape it about myself I will look as beautiful as those two models.

Then came the comments! I am short and round and graying and have weird hair, but when I put the shawl on I will look like those ladies. Right? I bet I'm not the only person who thinks that, either!

  18. I actually had the chance to tell Jared Flood himself how wonderful I thought it was that they used a "mature" woman in the photos of this collection. (He presented a program at Squam this year and was around for a few days.) I'm sure he's heard from many of us, so we'll see if he listens!!
